Deborah Lawrence wins Bank Worker of the Month for September

Deborah, Registered Nurse at Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, was one of September’s Bank Worker Of The Month winners. We met Deborah following the award to congratulate her and find out more about her day to day role and experiences working for NHS Professional

  1. How did you get into your current area of work?

For the last 20 years I have been a district nurse working for Berkshire Healthcare.  I really enjoyed my role and the challenges it gave me.  However, due to personal circumstances, my perspective and priorities changed, so I decided to join the NHS Professionals Bank due to the flexibility it gives me in order to have a better work-life balance.

2. What does your typical day at work consist of?

Every day is different; different patients, different issues and different priorities.  Our turnover of patients means that we have the opportunity to make a difference.  The days I enjoy most are the days where I have time to do everything I need to do for the patient.

3. What do you love most about your job?

The staff in the teams I work with in Windsor and Maidenhead. They make the difference to me along with the support from management. We all look out for each other, helping each other in providing the best possible care for our patients.

4. How would your colleagues describe you in three words?

The Three words would be “Happy”, “Helpful”, “Conscientious”.

5. What’s been your proudest achievement at work to date?

My proudest moment was passing my “Nurse Prescribing”.  At the time it was decided that all community matrons should undertake this qualification in Reading.   It took a lot of work and I took holiday to ensure that I spent enough time learning everything.  The practical assessment was really difficult, and everything was recorded as you were taken through the various scenarios.  I passed first time and was proud of my achievement and in the knowledge of how this would impact the service.

6. What is the most challenging part of your role?

The most helpful team we have is the IT Team – However, the IT we use does tend to give us the most challenges.  We are constantly challenged with lack of signal and having to duplicate work as sometimes our work is lost.

7. What’s the best thing about working for NHSP?

The best thing about working on the bank is the flexibility. I retired having worked more than 20 years for the Trust as I needed a better work-life balance. Bank work allows me to do as much work as I want, when I want, without feeling guilty about taking time out. The bank allows me to do the job I love working with great people, working when and where I want.

8.  What do you usually do on your days off?

Working on the Bank has given me the ability to decide when to work, so I can spend more time with family and friends, not all who live close by. I have more time to do the things I enjoy and have recently taken up yoga and still enjoy my exercise classes

The Bank Worker Of The Month award acknowledges Bank Workers who have gone above and beyond what is required in their everyday duties.
There is an award for four categories; Care Support Worker/Healthcare Assistant, Specialist Nurse, Registered Nurse and Admin & Clerical.
To win this award, the workers must fulfil the following criteria:

• Achieve ‘5 – Excellent’ on all five of the sections of the ‘Performance Evaluation System’, which is completed by the Ward Manager at the end of each shift.
• Not cancel any shifts for that month.
• Fill the highest number of shifts in the month for which they are being considered for.
